Mirrors - Shirley 7" (Violet Times 104) Cleveland, Ohio 1975. Ground zero pre-punk sounds reissued

Two new reissued releases from VTWrecks available now. 35 years later and both these wrecks still sound timeless. Essential Cleveland, Ohio pre-punk / proto-punk sounds, trax recorded in 1975.

Although these two trax were recorded in 1975, their release would have to wait until two years later when original Mirrors drummer, Michael Weldon facilitated their release on Hearthan in 1977, the label run by David Thomas of Pere Ubu.

VT 104 - Mirrors - "Shirley" b/w "She Smiled Wild" 7" w/ sturdy, color pocket sleeves

This 45 is now SOLD OUT from VIOLET TIMES.

“You shouldn’t try to borrow other people’s skin.” - Lucas Gunn

“Inspiration: Petertag and Joshua McSmiles in Cheeseburger, OR”

(choose yr own adventure: read on, or just split straight to the purchase page or at least to the end of this page where the meat tastes best, i.e. a 'simple' description of the sounds)

I just the other nite saw someone ‘online’ sayin' that people need to stop dumping on Eugene, Oh Are once more, but nah, dump away, i say. It’s Oregon. Or-eeee-Gone. Where burnouts and misguided, and/or never guided, hippies and the overly liberal to a fault go to die. False complacency capitol, despite the ever prevalent protest contingent in the PacNW and the ones really making it weird and not just a bumper sticker some businessman swiped from Austin, TX. “Reality is not real and I love this place!” Despite those making it more than just another commodification of culture so the NY Time$ and other$ of that ilk can pretend to have relevance via ‘coverage’ of the cool. Love to the visionaries, misfits and all you protest kids tho, mean it, no shit. - Signed, Vee Tee

If ya already ain’t, start thinking The Blimp here. Don’t forget why ya clicked. Just because it’s the internet does not mean you are not in charge.

Back to the general guh of that map spot tho - the end of the world, where burned out burners go to die. Young(-ish) artsters who cain’t get it up in the ‘big city’ and/or wanna ‘big fish / small pond’ it in the smallville vibe that OR meccas such as (my residence of a few lost years) Portland promote, and also to a less populated extent southward, Eugene, where our heroes, The Blimp, make their residence. Some genuinely righteous, brilliant and artastic souls there, to be sure, but a whole lots o’ desperation, loss, d-runk, and drugged out to a scum-dirt level of dying w/ eyes wide open mis-repped as ‘living’ abounds in that rain-soaked part of the world. Some are simply born there, they had no choice but to deal w/ it somehow.

Beauty abounds in that part of the U.S.A. The ocean is indeed beautiful until you drown in it and trees, they do fall. But that’s nature, not people, and not even my pal, Plate Tectonics, has much to say about the people there, “good and bad, bottom-line like everywhere else”, ol’ P-Tec will tell ya. Fall into the ocean- learn to swim, or die.

Don’t let any of the opening rant get in the way of Good Music, via The Blimp especially, i myself will tell ya. Give ‘em enough rope and they’ll swing. Give ‘em rock n roll and they’ll
swingjump and shout. Hunch about. “Hunchin’ hunchin’ hunchin’ man.” – good ol’ Haze. He's here too in the music of The Blimp, spiritually if no other obvious ways to be heard by the mass ear or that one you may've just turned on with.

Read some rock-write critique amidst Bone-twan’s b-ball speak and see what they is/was sayin’ in ref to his scribble regarding thee almighty Blimp unit and the initial ref sparking this opening spew. FIY and let’s move on to the record and band at hand.

The presumed relevance of the preceding rant in this soft-grey is that astute readers may indeed have noted that this is the kind of environs in which The Blimp have arisen and been operating on a small scale since nearly ten years prior. WHY has there not been a previous vinyl missive from these dudes (and lady) before, you might think upon hearing their brilliance? I have no tangible answer for you, friend. Thinking about knowing and other thoughts people have is not quite in the books I have skimmed looking for pictures or photos, drawings, and crayon-speak. All things will happen “in” their time, as they are meant to happen. It’s already the end of tomorrow, yesterday’s gone and by the way, who are you? (I'm a dropout.)

Think differently
(and don't forget to have fun along the way.)

However, one doesn’t need an occupation to know that everything’s not quite right these days, in the PacNW or the rest of the world. Because, to quote a long-lost friend hiding under her bed, “Monsters are real” and often the best, most fulfilling way to blast away the blues is w/ a full-frontal fucked up and loud, hairy, guitar animal rock n roll band. Which is what Lucas Gunn and The Blimp excel at.

Dance to the music. Get down. Feel it. Crawl. The Beat is hit. Shake yr hips. That’s hot and Rock n Roll is sex. Do it.

This is an ‘ancient’ quote, inked in the year prior to my escape from OH (to my exile on the prison planet PDX) - “C’mon let’s be demon / let’s be demon like the last time”. Most likely wine writ but certainly stained w/ some kind of hope, however lost or desperate, scrawled to a love long expired. I feel that heat now, as then, and that kind of fire also ignites in the sound of The Blimp. --- wait--- This is all making much sense to you, right? Starting back there at the front where it ends? --- Fuck it, let’s talk plainspeak, make it reeeaal eeeeasy on the blind who might still be reading. Let’s get down, done, to the damaged, and let’s get hell, let’s get real gone w/ The Blimp. Starting now, back there at the front where it ends. ("finally")

Here’s what I did write back once upon when asked to provide a preview/bio/whatever when The Blimp was set to perform at the WOW Hall last summer in Eugene, Oregon. It was ‘banned’, refused publication, tho myself and the band both agreed and knew it was good/worthy and described the band and at least part of what that means in no uncertain terms- any half-wit cretin could/would understand. More smrat types might shake their heads disapprovingly, (“what an asshole”) but still ‘get’ it.
Master, Master, it’s The Blimp! That’s what one gang of lysergic magicians foretold in Glendale, CA during one visionary’s acid 60’s. Paint the sound, paint the sound! Van Vliet’s ghost takes a trip on a wild ride to the scumpit oasis of Cheeseburger, Oh-ree-gone - long gone, let’s get real gone, beyond all the Johnnys and Jonies and into the get down gong bong foggy go gone on and on to the bent n busted days and nites of today...

According to Lucas Gunn, the man leading this twisted airship, the music that The Blimp makes is akin to driving a car upside down, and if that joyride is to yr liking, then how’s about you and I go for a spin in his nightmare? Gonna die in a car crash baby, won’t you drive me home tonite? Wild times, Violet Times, Wild Life is gonna run away…

When people ask me about The Blimp, and they don’t know shit from shazam, I tell ‘em that The Blimp is like if Mirrors were perpetually 17 years young but mutated accordingly for the past 40 years, got me? (these same people are usually only talking to me cuz I put out that Mirrors LP to start this label- otherwise i hate to reference other bands and generally steer clear of it ya know.)

The last, only, time I was in The Blimp’s hometown I peed in a trash can bag because the girl traveler was puking in that motel toilet and I couldn’t wait to contribute. Tied and threw it in the slough where my pee piss still floats to this day, many years later.

Lucas Gunn has been known to play in a trashcan, which is where garbage belongs, but I can’t exactly say that I’ve ever known any trashmen who’ve known their way with a song quite like this haunted head.

Finally, just so I know on which side of the line you stand, besides all of this other psychedelic pstuff–and I really do wanna know- when’s the last time you saw Petertag?

"Just watch me now" ((or)) "Listen to this"

“The Blimp, The Blimp, THE BLIMP” – thus spoke Antennae Jimmy Semens

The Blimp
is something akin to all of the above and something else entirely, soaring beyond mere caveman crunch evident in passing, ferociously ripping thru the past and any kind of perceived influences, providing the mass ear w/ a clatterist cacophony of sound/s for now times and beyond. Guitar flight, zig-zag wanderings, warped sense shatterings, spoken/acapella yearnings, theremin derangement, and more -sometimes combine, sometimes crash- wailing high, revealing to the listener a not hardly hidden pop-sensibility evident almost at once to even the most ‘never been experienced’ of ear and/or idea, life or song.

When every single mind in the physical has already been blown, what can ya really say or do? Blast away my blues. This is just a small tasting of things to come from this waking nightmare alive band.

The Blimp - Not Beer 12" EP

Where do you live?

RIYL: Mirrors, Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band,
The Hunches, good music

The same high quality you've come to expect from Violet Times, it's our first 'modern/current/new/unknown' band release and there's a definite reason for that. The Blimp belongs in this same hi-quality company, no question.

The Offset: Spectacles 9th February 2009 live at D-22 and elsewhere video footage

Founded in 2006, The Offset: Spectacles were hitting some serious sonic heights by the time of this early 2009 performance at Beijing's since shuttered D-22.  Despite this, most of the Earth world are only recently finding out about our favorite "Canto Psych" band.  Usually due to hearing their great self-titled November 2011 vinyl debut which even more heads got onto when we distributed copies of the LP earlier this year to the US.
Wait no longer if you want to purchase tho, because Rose Mansion Analog is down to their last handful of copies and Violet Times has no more copies either, so get it direct from the band/label if you want it.  If ya need more Offsets in the meantime, grab one of the brand new All Gone 'Workers' compilations highlighted by a 9 1/2 min live take from 7th of October 2010 at Xisi of The Offset: Spectacles' viola haunted throb, 'The Meat Grinder' - a cassette-only release, sold out any minute from now, most likely before you read this.
Here's up-to-now rarely seen February 2009 footage of the Offsets in action, one of the great bands of their era, in full flight.  Free in Sound.  The bulk of the clips are from D-22 w/ additional documentary and other color footage showing the band going thru a few different arrangements of tunes and different set-ups of the three in various combinations of viola / keys / guitar.  Any non-believers are sure to be converted and those of you who're already fans are going to receive the top shelf aural treatment that you deserve until the next releases by The Offset: Spectacles, already in the works.  Close yr eyes, look inward at the stars, see the phantom rhythm. . .

Kim Fowley knows about Violet Times & The Blimp...

Met the Living Legend, the Baby Bulldog himself, last evening at the Norton Records 'Kicksville Confidential' comic book release party. GREAT comic too- i say check it out. A true hero of epic proportions in the Violet Times multiverse, he's in town to host Norton's 25th Anniversary blowout (featuring Black Lips, 5.6.7.8's, Sonics, Reigning Sound, Question Mark & The Mysterians, Cyril Jordan & Roy Loney of Flamin' Groovies, and many, many more) as well as read from his upcoming Kicks Books mindbender, "Lord Of Garbage", which will soon join other fine Kicks reads from Nick Tosches, Sun Ra, and Andre Williams on the bookshelf. Congrats to Billy & Miriam on 25 years of debaucherous rock n roll wax greatness.

I gave him a DVD copy of way below ground Psychotronic classic, 'Petertag', made by Lucas Gunn of The Blimp, as well as 'Drano' & 'Shirley' 45s, while wearing my Jimbo Easter drawn & screened Garbage River t-shirt. Epic. Now that the Ultimate Underground Animal knows about us, we can sleep contentedly at nite, right? Let's hope he likes the film too! I think if anyone can or would appreciate this flick tho, it's the Tall Cool One.

Also, in a (perhaps not so) subliminal way, and to bring things full circle, 'Petertag' can be viewed, on some level at least, as a sort of tribute to Hasil Adkins, whose "Out To Hunch" LP started it all for Norton 25 years back. Well, that's at least one potential puzzle piece to this visual vavoom.

"vintage" Mirrors 'Shirley' Hearthan 45 ad from Psychotronic Video magazine

Hey hey, a quick one. Flipping thru a back issue of Psychotronic lately that i got from the best used record shop in NYC, my eye caught this tasty bit that i thought i'd share here. Cuz it's a cool bit and even relevant to this here sput that is VTWrecks. Nothing too involved, just exactly what the title up there sez. It's how i gripped my first copy of the classic pre- punk platter and many others did as well, i'm sure. Not sure that it was this particular issue that i saw back when- think there might've been a few ad variations over the years, but i ain't pulling out my other back issues this sec. He's still got issues available of the very worthy read at his site if ya so please, pleaser. B-movie, exploitation, 'something weird' type film fans take note, ok? Cool.

Don't think he's got copies still but I've got just a very few copies of the repress left if ya need, here, and the other classic Cle proto-punk wildness that Violet Times reissued at the same time, Poli Styrene Jass Band (aka: The Styrenes) 'Drano In Your Veins' 45 which is even harder to find in its original form and equally essential to these ears, if not the mass ear. Who said the good's gone?

And while i've got yr attention people, remember- there's no "the" in "Mirrors".

I interviewed John Morton in Maximum Rocknroll for the Foggy Notion art exhibition, yes i did

Hello there!

If you've been following Vee Tee of late, (and why wouldn't ya?) you must be in the know about a few things we've had going on of late, the upcoming debut vinyl release by the best band in the land, The Blimp from Eugene, Oregon and the big event, the Violet Times curated Foggy Notion art exhibition. You might also know about the interview i did w/ Morton to promote the exhibition that was published in the June 2011 issue of Maximum Rocknroll. The issue also featured a great comic of me interviewing him done by the wonderful Sonja Eklund which now appears online for the first time at the end of this post for those who don't want to get inky newsprint on their hands by reading the real deal printed version- remember 'print'? Good issue all around w/ an Uzi Rash interview (while you're at it, New Yorkers should check out his Mail Art show as well) and other fine tidbits and assorted random cool including a superb guest column by Kevin Failure of Pink Reason infamy, currently out in the wild making things happen, as usual, despite all of the know-nothing rumor mongers and naysayers. MRR has been on a roll of late w/ the Punk Comix issue being another recent highlight as they keep print alive in the face of indifference and other general anti-punk sentiments from the music world at large. Way to go ladies!
Now, without further ado, here's the intro and interview w/ the guy who may not exactly have 'invented' music as we know and like it but more or less 'perfected' it, electric eels founder, John D Morton.

There’s been much written about the musical exploits of the early 70’s Cleveland, Ohio band known as electric eels (yes, lower case as per lead vocalist Dave E’s intention) over the years, some of it true even. The band deservedly looms very large in under-the-counterculture sound circles and I strongly encourage anyone reading this to seek out their music, read about their exploits in a pre-punk world if you haven’t already done so. The liner notes to the 3x10” vinyl offering on Scat Records “Those Were Different Times” are a great place to start, w/ plenty of other stuff out there to read as well. One could even be justified in calling them the very first ‘punk’ band, whatever that means- if nothing else they remain to this day one of the most intense sounding and unique. After all of these years, it very much still is artastic.

In honor of his inclusion in the Violet Times curated art show, Foggy Notion, happening June 10th- June 26th at Live With Animals gallery in Brooklyn, NY I decided it would be a good time to find out about some of band leader John Morton’s other little-known doings over the years, specifically his visual art and other music he’s done post- eels.

He’ll be marking the debut performance of John Morton and The Dunking Swine Of Chelsea on June 17th 2011 along w/ The Tenses (Ju Suk Reet Meate and Oblivia) and a rare DJ set by Chris Freeman of Fusetron (the best distro around if ya don’t know- buy some records!) as a special event taking place during the Foggy Notion exhibition.
Violet Times… I've been told that only about 100 people total ever saw electric eels, would you agree and care to elaborate on their reaction/s, if any? Especially at the two Columbus, Ohio shows, pre- Extermination Night, where the other performers Mirrors and Rocket From The Tombs would at least be of a non-mainstream music making mindset, also making their own music of a sort not yet known or accepted by the mass ear. What about the non-members of those bands, just 'regular' audience members- who the heck were they, why'd they show up and what'd they think? (not presuming you know why they were there, etc. but just saying)

John Morton… 100 sounds like a plausible number. Our fan base, consisted of persons made up of people (who like people) who knew us, such as Bradly Field, Charlotte Pressler, other like-minded band people, such as Dan Didonato and Peter Laughner, at least understood what we were attempting. Family members such as Jill Marotta & Michele Zalopany, well they had to like us.

Our first gig was August of 1974 at the Moonshine Co-op in Columbus. We had the power pulled on us (I’ve heard that that is not a unique occurrence with punk bands, but there were no other “punk” bands at the time.)

We opened for “Hard Sauce” fronted by Jamie “Little Bit of Soul” Lyons. Jamie had one of the best set of pipes I ever heard. Davey and I were arrested that night. I remember every detail. Dave E. wore a trench coat festooned with rattraps, and I wore a safety pin jacket. Jamie bailed Dave E. out of jail. Our career? All downhill after that.

We thought the eels were going to be a huge success on a par with David Blowie (meant affectionately). WE WERE NOT!

I am gratified that we’ve had a modicum of post mortem success.

VT… Now for some post- eels band stuff, starting w/ the eels '76 session? Everyone knows electric eels ended in '75, so what's this and how'd it come about and was that truly the end then?

JM… Those sessions were the electric eels with additional side musicians and just for feces & laughs I called us “The Men From Uncle.” It was meant to go on, but never got further than that recording session. We were ostensibly (obviously in error) recording a tape to be played on WMMS as “Rocket From The Tombs” had done. I remember Laughner remonstrating the radio audience to [paraphrasing] “Record your own tapes, man!” in a sort of combo meritocracy/ noblesse oblige kind of way. It does mean something to be less acceptable than the “Rockets.”

VT... Which leads into X___X (ed. note- gentle reader, if you don't know, say ' X blank X ' ) which has been receiving more and more recognition these days. When did it start and end, did you play out much more?

JM… I was having a birthday party (maybe 25, 26, I could figure it out if I bothered to do the math.) Jim Ellis (and some of his junkie friends who later robbed us) and Andrew Klimek (Jamie “Mirrors” Klimek’s brother) attended. I remember I cut the birthday cake with a judo chop (hand smeared with frosting) because it was punk. Wife #1, the artist Michele Zalopany and I were moving to NYC in 7 months I thought I would form a band that lasted 6 months. Why??? Just seemed like a good idea at the time.

X____X. You could put anything between the X's, like "Appearing tonight, “X 'Charles Manson and the Family' X" In our short 6 month career we played out 4 times, recorded two 45s on Drome Records. We were a very tight band, not by design. Tony (Anton) Fier added a lot of professionalism with his work on the drumbo kit.

VT… What about Johnny and The Dicks, which is very interesting, very much performance art and not as music oriented, with a ‘fake’ band photo making the rounds, an LP release w/ no record included and the pre-recorded backing track done by The Styrenes independent of this 'band' ?

JM... I was just a touch grandiose (or 'grandioser’) in those days. I loved being an artist, but it didn't fulfill the exhilaration of performance, so I decided I would form a band that didn't play music, but did ''art!” Visual art songs like making polyester resin sculpture, posing for photos (one of the dicks was a professional photographer) and lip-syncing to the tape of a song I performed with The Styrenes. We did release a self-titled album that didn't contain a record, each one unique with a smattering of polyester resin on it. Michele, (Wife # 1) was a Dick, along with my friend and Mirrors drummer, Michael Weldon, future Bush Tetras, Laura Kennedy and Cynthia Sley, Andrew Klimek and his sister, Karen K. Karen Karen, and photographer/artist Charles Gilchrist. Oh yeah, and a guy named Paul Paternoster. In retrospect, these people following me into the void was pretty amazing. I am in their debt (OK, now they have to say they were in my debt) And fucking kudos to the brave them that’s followed me into the eels, X___X, Amoeba (raft boy), The New Fag MotherFuckers and The Dunking Swine of Chelsea.

VT… Which came first for you, art or music and how much would you say the two are related, electric eels often being dubbed a form of 'art terrorism', which seems more apt than even any kind of 'proto-punk' tag that people try to label you or your music as in hindsight.

JM… I always did both art and music. I got to play twelve string whilst the nerds of Lake Ridge Academy sang “Michael Row the Fuckin’ Boat Ashore.” They all wore white shirts and dark trousers and skirts. I however got to wear the “Roger (nee Jim) McGuinn folk singer outfit”, bulky knit turtleneck sweater and corduroy jacket. Cool!
I did the junior high bands (faking the lyrics to Louie Louie (“I stuck my boner in her hair”)) worked my way into high school bands then it was the eels.

Art Terrorism was a purposeful quantification or updating of the Dadaist agit-prop nihilist/annihilation twisty band thing. When conceptual art was just beginning, there were two strata, in both divisions, the “Object” was deemed un-important simply the by-product of the more golden idea. (down with the Mona Lisa! It’s just some very old canvas with some fucking paint on it. Fuckin’ lumpen objet d’art worshippers!), The path I chose (also known as “The wrong path”) was based on the Dada/absurdist sensibility that the object is not important and neither is the idea, The successful branch Conceptualists were the effete [pseudo] intellectuals making cherished “golden and geniused” and oh so collectable ideas. Conceptual artists, reading Wittgenstein (which they had no fathom of) and drawing fucking numbers on the wall AND FUCKING SELLING the fucking photographs of the fucking numbers (photographs, which, by the way ARE objects.) Sour grapes? I’ll let you, Dear Reader, decide after you digest the following anecdote.
A little dog & pony show of a conceptual art piece where the artist (me) actually understands Wittgenstein (at least a bit). Wittgenstein had a proof against solipsism. He postulated that the solipsist could not maintain his or her solipsism in the close proximity of another human in intense physical and/or emotional pain. I informed my philosophy professor that when I was on heroin, I could have beheld a chopped baby at my feet and said, “Oh wow man!” The Prof excitedly waved his hands and outburst, “Why you’ve disproved Wittgenstein’s theory!” Fuck you right path conceptualists AND I got an “A” in philosophy for taking drugs!

VT... When was your first visual art show? I know a little about "Murder, Suicide and Junk" and something in Buffalo at an Arts Center (maybe it was just a Johnny and The Dicks performance?) - any other shows over the years and how do they compare w/ the most recent "Photo Falling - Word Falling" in '08 ?

JM... Kinda’ Wittgensteinian stuff continued.
One of my greatest exhibition coups was exhibiting at MoMA without knowing it. People were telling me they saw a photograph of me shooting dope at MoMA. In 1980 I had organized the 'Murder, Suicide & Junk' at 'A B C No Rio.’ I had Tom Warren take a photograph of me hitting up. 30 years later MoMA mounted a lame and [ludicrous] exhibition called LOOKING AT MUSIC: SIDE 2'' replete with pictures of Sonic Youth, Television, my wiki-enemy Richard Hell and the most unpunk of punk, The Talking Heads. It was supposedly the NY [oh so hip] music/art scene of the 70’s and 80’s, and for the back-story they printed a poster from the ABC No Rio book including (you got it) THE JUNKIE PHOTO!! “Look at me [Made it,] Ma! Top of the world!”

I was exhibiting art since the early 70’s, but I found my niche and peers when I moved to New York, exhibiting with Collaborative Projects Inc in The Times Square Show, A Real Estate Show, etc.

VT... The loft in what’s now known as (the quite different from back then) Carroll Gardens that you lived in w/ Paul Marotta staged a few multi-media events throughout the '80s, were you around for these and did you participate- in what capacity, if so?

JM… The event we did was freezing our asses off in the winter and having to import water from outside.

VT... What about the "lost years" of the 80's and 90's, of which the public knows hardly anything Mortonian? I've read that piece you wrote in a 90's Cle Magazine, is that basically how it was for you, making art, surfing, doping, writing?

JM… Wife left, left bereft, crying, suicide attempt, further suicide attempts sublimated via “Why kill myself when they’ve invented this nifty drug, heroin, which will do it for me!” Couple years being a junkie then stopped taking heroin. “At least I can drink!” & boy could I drink! Proudly made it to stage four on the Jellinek Scale of Alcoholism. That’s the stage that includes, jails, institutions and death. Jailed in Madrid (jails), hospitalized (institutions) after a nasty pistol whipping (or more properly Uzi whipping) for saying “Fuck You” to a carabiniere in Venice. I’ve heard that normal people don’t engage the services of a psychologist in Lisbon when they are on vacation. Stint on the flight deck. Depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Bipolar II, Co-occurring psychiatric and substance abuse disorders. Time just seemed to fucking fly by.

VT... Which leads us to yr more recent activities. How did The New Fag MotherFuckers, Amoeba (raft boy) and/or any other bands you've had more recently come about and why did they end so abruptly? Anything to say about the recent Dymaxion Tour marking the 35th anniversary of The Styrenes, of which you were a participant?

JM… The bands came about because I wanted to do a band. Just like forever. Why did they end so abruptly? That’s what bands always seem to do, unless you’re the Rolling Stones. Bands are costly and a lot of work. In NYC the rhythm sections expect to get paid to practice.

I talked about forming a new band for twenty (count em, 20!) years in bars. I finally formed a band Amoeba (raft boy) seven months after I got sober in 1994. I’m not at all advocating sobriety; it just worked for me. Twelve step groups can be a haven for musicians that are still alive.

Confidentially between you and me, I was spared the final crushing embarrassment of being drunk on Facebook as a Cleveland colleague recently did as evidenced by his “slurring of written words.”

RE: The Styrenes Dymaxion Tour, I wanted to leave off the 35th Anniversary stuff or at least call it 25th Anniversary. I had a great time.

VT... Recent art you've been doing? Including the youtube videos you've done in recent times which are pretty great and funny, how's the comedy career coming along? Also, Mortonia has come along as less of a 'fuck you' to the world and more a fine, fine showcase for much of the art and music that you've done over the years, any reason behind that you'd care to share?

JM… Comedy career?

Punk Henny Youngman, “Take my wife . . . fuck you!”

(I forgot to ask, but can MRR afford italics?)

I was once asked what kind of music do you do 30 years after the eels? The answer is “the kind of music I would do 30 years after the eels.” Same with visual art, I’m doing what I’m doing because it’s what I’m doing.

VT... For being known as such an extreme persona over the years and a self-proclaimed nihilist, you really seem at peace w/ your world when i've spoken or emailed w/ you. Even more so than others i've dealt w/ from back in the days just post- the Cuyahoga River catching fire. How did this come about, or am i just being the set up man here for the 'fuck you' punch line?

JM… Fuck you, James.

I've reached a point in my life where nihilism and peace are not a dichotomy. More than one wife (actually #s 2 and 3) had felt it necessary to admonish me with, “No Swastikas!”
Who would self-proclaim oneself as a nihilist? Is one a self-proclaimed Muslim or Jew? Everyone thinks a nihilist kills his or her roommate’s cat. We get a lot of bad press.
Nihilism is the new existential morass!

A nihilist is just a sociopath that has taken a college course in philosophy.

I usually do my art (and in this case music) site specific. What is appropriate can change with the venue. I mean, I wanted to get James Levine to stage dive at the met, but he didn’t go for it.

VT... How do you feel about the recent recognition you've been getting and/or the word 'legacy' as it may or may not apply to you and your life? In my world and many others reading this, you loom very large to this day and will continue to.

JM… Yes James, I think it would actually be pretentious of me not to take on the mantle of . . . legend. Perhaps that realization is why my memoirs are simply entitled . . . “I.”
No further explanation is required. It should be out this year.

And I said I was grateful before. I won’t say it again.

VT... Finally, did you really beat up all of the other electric eels ? -and when's the last time you saw Dave E.?

JM... Yes, I am not particularly proud of it but I did do the smash-a-roo thing to the other band mates (except Nick Knox.)

Dave E. is very private these days. I saw him maybe ten or twelve years ago. He is born again (as in born again Christian); married with doves, a cat and a dog.

The eels Dave E. surfaced when I told him that Brian McMahon was working on his autobiography. He got his eels-incredulous look that only he could countenance like when he asked Nick, “Why do you stink so bad?”

Dave and I were glad to see each other. Don’t tell him about my memoirs.

Violet Times presents: Foggy Notion art exhibition - June 10th-26th @ Live With Animals

Hey!

You might have heard the (teenage) news by now but in case ya haven't, a certain baby animal wants to turn you on, baby. What can a one man 'fan label' do for ya w/ no dough these days? Well, if you're me (and i am) it means you'd hatch a crazed plan to showcase some of my fave musicians and their visual side/s to the unsuspecting public. Who knew? Who cares, let's have some fun and do like The Godz said, and 'Turn On'...

This is the 'official' word, bird:
Violet Times wants to turn you on.

Over the years of listening to my records I began to take an even greater appreciation of some of my favorite bands’ record covers. These outrageous sounds were often housed in sleeves adorned w/ equally compelling artwork, almost always done by a band member who had also made the music I was hearing.

One day whilst cruising thru a mini ‘landmark’ tour of sorts in my former South Brooklyn hood w/ one of the prime movers in Cle-punk history, a little black egg dropped out of the earhole of my skull and the idea for this visual spectacle was subsequently hatched.

Each of the Foggy Notion artists have been creating music and art for quite some time- a few have been recording & performing since as far back as the very early 70's. In some ways they are all fairly well known in the under-the-counter culture world of music & out sounds but they've all been simultaneously creating visual art throughout the years in far more obscurity. Violet Times thinks it would be great to shine a light on another aspect of what these individuals do that is most likely less known to the mass ear and eye.

This is not at all to imply that I want to have this be some kind of record cover art showcase- I’ve never wanted that at all and that’s not what one should expect when attending the exhibit. The Foggy Notion art exhibition is about their other visually artastic activities. The music as released and sleeved is only the gateway into these other endeavors. Mine, and now yours…

There will also be musical performances thoughout the month featuring the participating artists. This part will be great for the blind, if nothing else. I'm super excited-and i barely even need corrective lenses!

Come out and say 'hi'.

Here's the lineup, also got a few GREAT DJ's to spin wreckords at these as well.

Poli Styrene Jass Band - Drano In Your Veins 7" (Violet Times 103) Cleveland, Ohio 1975. Ground zero pre-punk sounds reissued

VT 103 - Poli Styrene Jass Band - "Drano In Your Veins" b/w "Circus Highlights" 7" w/ hand-stamped sleeves Two new reissued releases from VTWrecks available now. 35 years later and both these wrecks still sound timeless. Essential Cleveland, Ohio pre-punk / proto-punk sounds, these heavily dosed trax were recorded at Owl Studios in Columbus, Ohio, August of 1975 at the same session where Mirrors laid down an album's worth of trax, mostly compiled on the inaugural Violet Times release. This is what Paul Marotta & Jamie Klimek did next. On 9.20.75 the last performance of Mirrors & Electric Eels took place at a Case Western Reserve University courtyard at WRUW-FM. This was also the first show for Poli Styrene Jass Band. "The end of Mirrors, the birth of The Styrenes, and the revenge of the eels" - Jamie Klimek

This 45 is now SOLD OUT from VIOLET TIMES.

Mirrors "Something That Would Never Do" LP

Mirrors "Something That Would Never Do" LP

I've got the last copies of this LP in this dimension... Here's what i said last year when it came out:

Finally! The classic Cleveland, OH sounds from the 70's all on one handy full length- 15 trax, including both sides of the Hearthan 7" single, all but one of the "Those Were Different Times" Scat 10" cuts, and others from "Hands In My Pockets" cd on Overground. It's solid, some might say a "best of" even. All trax recorded '74 and '75. Officially licensed from the band and remastered for the ear by John Golden, includes those cool old school, tip-on jacket covers that most of the record nerds i know love, but don't seem to know what they are. 800 copies, worldwide.

Members of Electric Eels, Styrenes, Rocket From The Tombs, Pere Ubu, Easter Monkeys, etc.
